Goku Showing Up In Super Hero Would Undermine Gohan & Piccolo

Unlike previous stories in the anime, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero doesn’t need Goku. Here’s why his presence would hold back Gohan and Piccolo.

Unlike previous stories in the anime, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero doesn’t need Goku, whose presence would undermine Gohan and Piccolo’s story. Of course, Goku is confirmed to appear in the movie in some capacity, but it’s possible that he’ll be filling a reduced role this time around. In fact, some suspect he’ll be a supporting character limited to just a few scenes.

Goku and Vegeta have been the focus of Dragon Ball Super since the beginning of the anime, but there’s a sense that things will be different in its second movie. The second trailer for Super Hero has created the impression that the movie may give the spotlight to Gohan and Piccolo. In the footage, the duo could be seen going toe-to-toe with Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, two powerful androids created by a new incarnation of the Red Ribbon Army. As for Goku and Vegeta, there’s no confirmation that either will participate in the battle with the androids. Thus far, Goku has only been spotted fighting Broly on Beerus’ planet.

Oxtero VIDEO OF THE DAY

Given that Goku has always been the star of Dragon Ball Super, a common assumption is that even if the movie begins with Gohan and Piccolo fighting the Red Ribbon Army, at some point or another they’ll need Goku (and possibly Vegeta) to save the day. However, it would be much better for the movie – and the characters – if this didn’t happen. After sidelining Gohan and Piccolo for so long, Dragon Ball Super put the two back on the right path during the Tournament of Power and opened the door for them to become relevant again. It feels only natural for Super Hero to follow through on the anime’s setup by completing Gohan’s redemption arc and providing another much-needed boost to Piccolo’s power level.

Looking at what’s been shown so far, Super Hero promises to be the first Dragon Ball story in years to give significant attention to Gohan and Piccolo. The Tournament of Power was a good start, but Gohan still has an unfulfilled wish to attain the power necessary to protect his family from harm. By beating the Red Ribbon Army’s androids and saving the Earth (without Goku’s help), he can prove that he finally accomplished his goal. Gohan demonstrated that he was worthy of being called Dragon Ball’s strongest when he defeated Perfect Cell – and Super Hero feels like his best chance to get back his lost reputation.

That won’t work if Gohan and Piccolo’s fight with Super Hero’s androids culminates in them relying on Goku and Vegeta to finish the fight. Such a narrative choice would be an uninspiring repeat of Dragon Ball Super’s Golden Frieza Saga, where Gohan, Piccolo, and the rest of the Z-Warriors’ main purpose in the story was to hold off Frieza until Goku and Vegeta could arrive. This time, the anime can make proper use of its ensemble cast of heroes by letting someone other than Goku beat the villain. Depending on what happens, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero can allow Gohan and Piccolo to rightfully position themselves as powerful allies that can fight beside Goku and Vegeta in the future.
