The official script for Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals Michelle Jones/MJ may remember her ex-beau Peter Parker at the end of the film.

Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home

The official script for Spider-Man: No Way Home reveals Michelle Jones/MJ may remember Peter Parker at the end of the film. Over a month since the film’s release in theaters, Marvel Studios, and Sony have decided to drop the full No Way Home script online. Written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the film wraps up director Jon Watts’ Homecoming trilogy and capitalizes on the MCU ever-evolving multiverse concept.

No Way Home sees Spider-Man (Tom Holland) dealing with his secret identity as Peter Parker being revealed to the world. Having been implicated in the murder of Mysterio, Peter’s status as a divisive figure now affects the lives of his family and friends. For example, Peter, MJ (Zendaya), and Ned (Jacob Batalon) don’t get accepted into MIT due to recent “controversies”—which is what ultimately drives Peter to ask Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. When the subsequent memory spell goes awry, iconic characters from across the multiverse, who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man, are brought into the MCU, such as Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), and a pair of familiar webslingers who know a thing or two about « great power » and « great responsibility. » At the end of the film, Peter realizes the only way to contain Strange’s spell/send everyone back is to erase Peter Parker from everyone’s memory in his timeline.

Oxtero VIDEO OF THE DAY

Given enough time has passed since the release of No Way Home, the film’s script has now been released online. On top of being able to relive the blockbuster’s biggest moments by reading it, the script offers insight into key moments, including the final scene between Peter and MJ. Thanks to “deja vu” and a “lingering sense of recognition,” No Way Home’s script reveals MJ may remember Peter at the end of the film. Check out the excerpt via Reddit user Tesgoul:

Before Strange casts that final spell, Peter says goodbye to MJ and Ned promising them he’ll find them afterward and refresh their memories. Later, Peter goes to the donut shop where MJ works and finds his friends have gotten into MIT. After revisiting MJ’s quote of “[expecting] disappointed because then you’re never disappointed” from earlier in the film, MJ then says, “something feels different this time,” which factors into Peter’s decision to break his promise and go it alone. On top of being implied by a “lingering sense of recognition” when Peter leaves the donut shop, the fact that MJ is still wearing Peter’s broken Black Dahlia necklace at the end of the film seems to confirm she (subconsciously) remembers him.

Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending leaves Disney/Marvel Studios and Sony with a plethora of options moving forward. While the memory spell could facilitate a divorce between Spider-Man and the MCU should Marvel Studios/Sony negotiations ever break down again, Sony producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have confirmed they actively developing a story for Spider-Man 4. It remains to be seen if Holland will star as he’s under no contractual obligation. If he returns, it seems more than likely both Zendaya and Batalon will also reprise their roles and eventually, truly regain their memories of Peter Parker.
