How Every Major Ozark Season 4 Part 1 Death Was Foreshadowed

Ozark is known for being unpredictable. That being said, the fate of its characters can be gleaned by observing how Ozark foreshadows certain events.

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Ozark.

Ozark, Netflix’s critically-acclaimed antihero crime drama, is known for foreshadowing crucial events, and this includes the deaths of important characters. Through the presence of certain elements and the crafty use of Ozark‘s gorgeous filming locations, it’s not unheard of for the series’ writers to sometimes drop clues about the fate of certain characters down the line. Indeed, deaths and pivotal events have been foreshadowed by Ozark since season 1.

When Jonah Byrde (Skylar Gaertner) was just a young boy, he came upon a documentary on the European starling, an invasive bird species that threaten the natural harmony of locations where they settle – just like how the Byrdes invaded and upended the balance of power in the Ozarks. Before Ben Davis (Tom Pelphrey) even moves in with the Byrdes, Ben first appears on Ozark as a teacher violently overreacting to his students sharing a digital photo and not paying attention in class, foreshadowing how Ben’s unpredictability would later cause his death. Meanwhile, Navarro cartel lawyer Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) is characterized as a cold-blooded killer who overtly threatens to have the Byrdes killed – only to later get executed by her own cartel enforcer when Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) inadvertently green-lights her death by asking Omar (Felix Solis) to get Helen off their back.

Ozark‘s foreshadowing for certain events and deaths can be found throughout the series. This tradition continues in Ozark season 4 part 1. Here’s how the deaths of Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery), Wyatt Langmore (Charlie Tahan), and Frank Cosgrove Sr. (John Bedford Lloyd) were foreshadowed.

Darlene Snell Was Ozark’s Most Unpredictable and Emotional Villain

Since season 1, Darlene has been the most unpredictable character on Ozark – at least until Javi (Alfonso Herrera), the erratic new Navarro boss, entered the picture. While the events in the previous seasons suggested that Ruth (Julia Garner) was going to kill Darlene, Javi’s presence throws a wrench into this logical conclusion. After Darlene miraculously survives a heart attack, Javi shoots her right in the heart. Moreover, Javi kills Darlene in a similar fashion to how Darlene has killed many others before – unexpectedly and inside her own home.

Wyatt Langmore Never Really Used His Superior Intelligence

Ruth has repeatedly told Wyatt that he is the smartest of the Langmores and how he’s wasting his potential because he under-utilizes the power of his mind. Indeed, although Wyatt proves that he’s cut from a different cloth than his late dad and uncles, who were all stupid enough to get themselves killed, Wyatt never really uses his brain to either uplift himself or get out of bad situations. It’s a shame because Wyatt was not only “book smart” like Jonah, he also had every opportunity to get out of the Ozarks. In the end, despite possibly being the most intelligent Langmore, Wyatt chooses to follow his heart instead of his head by marrying Darlene, even though he knows that Darlene is bad news. Echoing how Wyatt repeatedly refused to use his brain, Javi shoots him in the head.

Frank Cosgrove Sr. Had A Knack For Striking Bad Deals

Marty convinces Frank to deal with him only after Buddy (Harris Yulin) reminds Frank that he slept with Frank’s wife. Later, the Kansas City Mafia gets repeatedly screwed over by the Byrdes and the Navarro cartel. Moreover, even after Darlene shoots Frank Cosgrove Jr.’s (Joseph Sikora) penis in retaliation for when Jr. beat up Ruth, Frank still agrees to deal with Darlene, which, unsurprisingly, results in disaster as well. Frank’s knack for striking bad deals is why he never truly ascends to become one of Ozark‘s most dangerous villains. Fed up by his own bad decisions, Frank accosts Darlene at home and asks her for money. Instead of paying Frank what she owes, Darlene shoots him with a shotgun – Frank’s final bad deal.

Ozark season 4 part 2 is bound to pull similar tricks. Despite the show’s unpredictability, these elements of foreshadowing provide clues about Ozark‘s dark and bloody future. As Ozark nears its final episodes, it will be interesting to see how the deaths and final fates of each main character will be foreshadowed.
