Returning characters like Miles Morales will be joined by some new Spider-heroes in the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

After the astronomical success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, fans have been highly anticipating the movie’s sequel, now revealed to be split into two parts, with the first set for release on October 7th of this year.

After the first look trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) showed Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy back together and journeying through the multiverse, before coming across Miguel O’Hara (also known as Spider-Man 2099), the prospect that a wider range of heroes will appear in the sequel seems likelier, and there are already both familiar and new faces confirmed to appear.

6 Miles Morales / Spider-Man

Protagonist Miles Morales was one of the best characters of Into the Spider-Verse, and he of course will be appearing in the sequels to continue his story and journey after becoming Spider-Man, as shown in the Across the Spider-Verse trailer.

Given that the death of Miles’ uncle, Aaron Davis, played a vital role in the first film’s story, it seems only natural that Across the Spider-Verse will see Miles still dealing with his grief over the loss while also getting wrapped up in new experiences. Though no villains have been confirmed for the movie yet, the trailer indicates that Miles’ first meeting with Spider-Man 2099 may not be altogether friendly.

5 Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman / Spider-Gwen

The return of Gwen Stacy is just one of many reasons Across the Spider-Verse is a Sony picture release to look forward to in 2022, after the character’s appearance in the first movie was this version of Gwen’s cinematic debut. Gwen is also set to be at the center of a female hero led Spider-Verse spinoff featuring Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman and Cindy Moon (also known as the hero Silk).

As a hero whose level of experience falls between Peter B. Parker’s and Miles’, Gwen acted as a kind of intermediary during Into the Spider-Verse, showcasing a heroism that Miles could aspire to, while still learning herself. Her personal style and distinctive costume also serve to set her apart visually from other Spider-heroes, so often dressed in blues and reds.

4 Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099

One of the most exciting reveals from the Across the Spider-Verse teaser trailer showed Miguel O’Hara, or Spider-Man 2099, in full web-slinging mode for the very first time. He’s swinging through a mysterious cityscape as he seemingly battled or pursued Miles Morales in his Spider-Man costume.

The character first appeared on-screen during the post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse, where he developed the technology to travel across worlds and visited another Earth. This established that Miguel would become a larger part of the Spider-Verse franchise, and his presence in the sequel’s trailer has confirmed that. Spider-Man 2099’s origins as a hero from the future will add another interesting layer to the movie, establishing the existence of time travel and presumably its ramifications.

3 Peter B. Parker / Spider-Man

Peter B. Parker’s voice actor Jake Johnson confirmed the character’s return for the Spider-Verse sequel, offering fans another chance to see this older and somewhat worn out version of the classic Spider-Man character.

After the events of Into the Spider-Verse gave Peter B. Parker a renewed sense of purpose and more positive outlook on life, last leaving him to visit Mary Jane and make the first steps needed to repair their relationship, his circumstances in the sequel are still currently a mystery. But given his mentorship of Miles (and to an extent, Gwen) Peter’s return will probably see him imparting more lessons onto the younger heroes as he navigates and tries to balance his personal and vigilante lives.

2 Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman

Issa Rae will voice newcomer Jessica Drew, also known as the hero Spider-Woman, in Spider-Woman: Across the Spider-Verse, marking the character’s movie debut decades after her self-titled animated TV series, which ran from 1979 to 1980.

Jessica Drew’s long-running on-the-page history means that there are some elements of the character that only comic book fans know about Spider-Woman at this point, but her appearance in the movie is certain to popularize the character once again. Although as of yet no visuals have been released for this version of Spider-Woman, the memorable flair of Spider-Verse’s animation style is sure to depict the hero in a charming way.

1 Takuya Yamashiro / Japanese Spider-Man

Writer and producer of the Spider-Verse movies Phil Lord has teased Japanese Spider-Man’s appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, though whether this is as a cameo or in a larger capacity still remains to be seen.

This incarnation of the character, known in his civilian life as Takuya Yamashiro, first appeared in the Japanese television series Spider-Man which ran from 1978 to 1979. This gave rise to the character’s popularity in Japan in a show which utilized the character’s iconic costume but otherwise largely deviated from the source material of the comics. His presence in the movie could allow for the exploration of some alternative Spider-Man lore, as this version of the character’s powers have extraterrestrial origins.
