DC Officially Confirms Which Hero Is Its Version of Deadpool

DC just confirmed which of its heroes is the true equivalent of Deadpool as they step outside reality to commentate Suicide Squad’s latest battle.

Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad #12!

There is only one hero in the DC Universe who can truly lay claim to being the company’s equivalent of Deadpool, and Suicide Squad just confirmed it’s Ambush Bug. Ambush Bug, recently pressed into joining Task Force X, regularly breaks the fourth wall, and in Suicide Squad #12, he meets a Deadpool pastiche from Earth-8, and the encounter reveals why Ambush Bug is truly DC’s version of Deadpool. The issue is on sale now in print and digital, and is written by Robbie Thompson and Dennis Hopeless, drawn by Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira and Dexter Soy, colored by Marcelo Maiolo and Matt Herms, and lettered by Wes Abbott.

Oxtero VIDEO OF THE DAY

Created by Keith Gifffen, Ambush Bug first appeared in 1982’s DC Comics Presents #52. Ambush Bug’s real name is Irwin Schwab (or so he says) and he wears a green suit that allows him to teleport anywhere in the multiverse. Ambush Bug’s grasp on reality is tenuous at best, which allows him to break the fourth wall and talk to readers; however, it also makes the other heroes view him as a joke and a loose cannon. Recently, Ambush Bug somehow made his way to the Suicide Squad, which Amanda Waller has repurposed to help achieve her goals of claiming a new Earth as her own. Waller seeks to build her own Justice League and use them to “liberate” Earth-3, sealing it off from the rest of the multiverse. Ambush Bug has continued his wise-cracking, metatextual ways even in the face of such heavy adventures, and on Earth-8 (DC’s parody of the Marvel Universe), readers learn why he truly is DC’s Deadpool.

Amanda Waller has sent the Suicide Squad, including Ambush Bug, to Earth-8, a world populated by pastiches of Marvel characters. Battling DC’s parody of the Thunderbolts, Ambush Bug meets Blood Pouch, whose suit strongly resembles Deadpool’s – the only difference is Blood Pouch wears a clown mask. Clearly the Earth-8 Deadpool, Blood Pouch fights Ambush Bug, but the two quickly realize they have a lot in common – like sounding like an “attractive Canadian” (a reference to Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds) as well as continually breaking the fourth wall. When Major Force, another Squad member, escalates the situation by slaughtering people indiscriminately, Blood Pouch and the rest of his team teleport away. Ambush Bug seems sad, telling Blood Pouch to stay in touch.

Characters who regularly break the fourth wall, such as Ambush Bug and Deadpool, are nothing new in comics. However, few approached it with as much zany aplomb as Ambush Bug. Ambush Bug regularly talks to readers, offering commentary on not only the very events transpiring around him, but also riffing on comic book tropes. Ambush Bug’s tradition of skewering superhero comics continues with his time in Suicide Squad. If it had not been for Ambush Bug, other characters who get metatextual, such as Deadpool, She-Hulk, Harley Quinn and Blood Pouch, may not exist.

While other DC contenders exist – such as Harley Quinn, Teen Titans Academy’s Stitch, and direct parody Red Tool – only Ambush Bug truly embodies Wade Wilson’s relationship with the comic medium, able to physically step outside the action and fully understand he’s in a fictional world, even poking fun at the recent release of DC’s Peacemaker show. In getting as close as possible to showing Ambush Bug receiving Deadpool’s blessing, Suicide Squad acknowledges him as DC’s only hero who can meet Wade Wilson quip for meta quip. Ambush Bug’s meeting with Blood Pouch reinforces why this wacky, fourth-wall-breaking character is truly DC’s equivalent of Deadpool.
