Euphoria producer Jeremy O. Harris defends creator Sam Levinson amid criticism of the second season’s nudity, drug use, and character arcs.

Euphoria producer Jeremy O. Harris defends creator Sam Levinson amid criticism of season 2. The Euphoria creator is the son of the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson, known for directing films like The Natural, Good Morning, Vietnam, and Rain Man. Sam Levinson has only made a few films in his relatively young career, including Another Happy Day, Assassination Nation, and Malcolm & Marie. He has instead made a name for himself with HBO’s relentlessly explicit teen drama.

Euphoria is rather unique in the sense that Levinson has written and directed almost every episode of the show, including each of season 2’s episodes so far, a trend that will likely continue for the remaining three. After a long break (save for two bottle episodes produced during the pandemic), Euphoria returned to HBO for a second season on January 9 and wasted no time returning to form. The show famously does not soften its depiction of difficult issues like drug addiction, abusive relationships, and mental health. Season 2, episode 5, « Stand Still Like the Hummingbird, » was possibly the show’s most intensely emotional episode yet. Euphoria‘s second outing has also received criticism for relegating some characters to the sidelines for certain episodes.

Now, in a new Twitter post, producer Jeremy O. Harris is coming to the Euphoria creator’s defense following the backlash to season 2. Harris urged fans to « stop talking s–t about my boy Sam Levinson, » claiming season 2 « is made for ppl with an intellect for CINEMA and not the impatience of TELEVISION. » Check out his full post below:

Though some could take issue with his word choice, it’s hard to argue with the sentiment of the Euphoria producer’s post. Harris went on to refer to the second season as a Gesamtkunstwerk, a German term that roughly translates to a « total work of art. » Case in point, Euphoria rejects the episode-by-episode mentality of most serial television. S2E5 was almost all about Rue, which means other important characters like Jules, Lexi, Maddy, Nate, and Cassie saw reduced roles. Hence, it’s important to experience the entire season first and judge it as a whole rather than by a single snapshot.

Euphoria doubled its viewership from season 1 to 2, which will naturally result in increased criticism for any show, especially one that has amped up its depiction of controversial topics like nudity and drug use. Despite the criticism, the show is undeniably popular and it won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, as HBO just renewed Euphoria for a third season. Maybe Levinson and co. can address some viewers’ concerns moving forward.
