Futurama Revival Coming to Hulu In 2023, Multiple Original Cast Members Returning

Futurama will emerge once again from its cryogenic slumber for a newly-announced revival at Hulu. According to a release, the long-running animated series will be hitting the streaming service in 2023 with 20 new episodes.

Original series cast members Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman will all return. John DiMaggio, who voiced Bender and several minor characters, is not currently attached. Variety is reporting–citing an unnamed individual with knowledge of the project–that if negotiations don’t work out for DiMaggio to return, the role will be recast.

« I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future… or really anything other than the present, » said co-developer and long-time series writer David X. Cohen. Striking a similar tone, creator Matt Groening joked, « It’s a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one more time before we get canceled abruptly again. »

As Groening’s comment makes reference to, Futurama has come and gone twice before. After originally debuting in 1999, Fox unceremoniously and quietly canceled the series in Season 4. After reruns on Adult Swim resuscitated the show’s audience, four direct-to-video films were produced, and then re-edited into Season 5 for Comedy Central–the latter network then threw the show a further lifeline for 26 episodes across Seasons 6 and 7. The previous presumed series finale aired on September 4, 2013.

Futurama earned six Emmy Awards–including two Outstanding Animated Program, seven Annie Awards, two Environmental Media Awards and two Writer’s Guild of America Awards.

Groening’s other big non-Simpsons series, Disenchantment, coincidentally has Season 4 hitting Netflix on February 9–the same day of this news.
