Following the announcement of Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast series being delayed indefinitely, Josh Gad and Luke Evans share their thoughts online.

In light of the announcement of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast prequel series being delayed indefinitely, stars Josh Gad and Luke Evans shared their thoughts on social media. Reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou from the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast film, both Gad and Evans were signed onto the limited musical series with an eight-episode order, set years before the events of the film. However, the series was recently halted due to scheduling conflicts and delay in creative elements.

The 2017 live-action remake of Disney’s classic Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast, grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide at the box office. Disney had announced a spin-off series focused on the iconic villainous duo due to the monumental success of the live-action film, which was slated to be developed and written by Gad and Once Upon a Time creators, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. Alongside Gad and Evans, Hawkeye star, Fra Fee, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond star, Jelani Alladin, were also set to star in the series.

Following the disheartening news of the Beauty and the Beast prequel series, Gad and Evans expressed their sorrows to their fans on Twitter. In a tweet, Gad confirms the unfortunate news and adds that they’ve tried to make the series possible, “but sometimes the best intentions & reality collide & nothing can be done.” Shortly after Gad’s response, Evans shared his devastation for the news and bid a temporary farewell to the titular characters with, “Goodbye, for now, from Gaston and Le fou,” ending with a heart emoji. This comes only a few days after singer and songwriter Rita Ora’s announcement of joining the cast. Filming and production of the series were initially supposed to begin this spring. However, they were later pushed to the summer due to weather restraints in Europe. As the series’ production continued to struggle with coordinating agendas and creative conflicts, it became difficult for its cast members to accommodate their availability due to their busy schedules. Gad plays a central role in Apple TV+’s animated series, Central Park, which was renewed for a season 3, while Evans is set to appear in the 2022 Disney’s live-action Pinocchio remake as the Coachman.

With the current situation of the pandemic, scheduling and time availability present themselves as a major challenge for many in the film industry. As for the confirmed cast members, it is currently unknown whether they will return for the postponed series in the future. Withal, Disney+ has not entirely abandoned the Beauty and the Beast prequel series, leaving the possibility for Gad and Evans to revisit the beloved characters of Gaston and LeFou again if the scheduling and creative elements allow for it.
