Powerpuff Girls Star Gives Promising Update On Live-Action Pilot Reshoot

Dove Cameron, who plays Bubbles in the live-action Powerpuff Girls series, gives an optimistic update about the filmmakers’ decision to get it right.

The live-action version of Bubbles gives some hope about the status of the Powerpuff series. The CW announced the development of the series early last year, intended to portray the iconic superheroines as older, disillusioned young women. The original series, The Powerpuff Girls, created by animator Craig McCracken, followed three children with superpowers who frequently saved the city of Townsville from monsters and other disasters.

Since its announcement, the series has hit numerous roadblocks. The first was that the network rejected the pilot episode, though it never revealed the full scope of that reasoning. Next, the show had initially cast Chloe Bennet (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Blossom, Dove Cameron (Descendants) as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup, but later lost Bennet due to scheduling conflicts after the rejection delayed production. Additionally, Donald Faison played Professor Drake Utonium in the pilot, but his role in the ongoing production is unknown. Despite everything, filming has supposedly been going along steadily, but there haven’t been many tangible updates for some time.

Cameron recently told ComicBook that the showrunners and producers are « very, very, very pleased » with where Powerpuff currently stands. Though she couldn’t delve into any meaningful details given the franchise’s popularity and the possibility of spoilers or misinterpretation, Cameron did make a point of saying that the creative team wants to get the show right. She even compares the rejected pilot to Game of Thrones, which also scrapped and revised its pilot before premiering. Read the full quote below:

« I have to be careful, because it’s such a big property, and it’s kind of a thin line I have to walk, talking about it in a way that doesn’t give anything away, or say anything too misleading, » Cameron told ComicBook. « Where we’re at right now, I can confidently say, is that the producers and [writer Diablo Cody], and everybody involved, their last communication with me is that they’re very, very, very pleased in a way that we were all not. The first time we did the pilot, we’ve all talked about it and likened it to Game of Thrones, that did a whole pilot, and then they were like ‘Scrap it. If we’re going to do this, we have to do it right straight out of the gate, or it’s not worth it.’ Powerpuff is such a high concept show, and the way we wanted to do it was so high concept, that there were 99 ways it could have gone wrong, and one way it could have gone right. And I think we were close, but we didn’t nail it. That’s for a number of reasons. I remember them calling me and being like ‘This is how it ended up, and this is what we would rather do,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I can’t even be mad about that. That’s fair. Let’s do that, then.’ I think they really just want to get it right. »

For such an ambitious project tied to a fan-favorite cartoon that today embodies nostalgia, Cameron’s comment about the show possibly being done wrong in 99 different ways is a refreshing bit of honesty. That must also be due to the « high concept » element of attempting to take such a bright, innocent show for kids and turning it into an edgy shadow of itself. The star seems aware of the attachment fans have to The Powerpuff Girls and hints that the creators seem to want to satisfy those same people.

Powerpuff seems to fall firmly into the camp of « who asked for this? » but if it’s determined to exist anyway, then it may as well be good. For some fans, The CW’s disapproval of the first pilot is a blessing, and even though there will always be detractors, the potential for a better show is a win for everybody. After all, the Internet itself bullied the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog team into producing the film fans wanted, so if the Powerpuff creatives seem poised to want to do the series and its fans justice, they should get the opportunity. Cameron’s positivity indicates that that could very well happen, but more information must emerge before the extent of these changes is apparent.
