Deep Rock Galactic‘s board game adaptation, Deep Rock Galactic – The Board Game, was fully funded on Kickstarter within 18 minutes of its launch. Deep Rock Galactic is the newest video game to be given the board game treatment, following other popular games like Borderlands, Stardew Valley, and Fallout.
Deep Rock Galactic is a four-player cooperative game that can be played on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation. The game has different classes that players can choose from and each of these has special perks and abilities. Players are sent into a mine that they must navigate in order to gain Gold, Morkite, and Nitra that allow them to purchase upgrades, complete missions, and call in supply drops. The main goal of the game is to get as much Morkite as possible and try to survive the waves of enemies that are sent while mining. Throughout the game, players can upgrade their dwarves using Deep Rock Galactic‘s KPI Terminal and give them special Perk Points to improve their chances of surviving.
Deep Rock Galactic launched its Kickstarter on February 10th with a goal of $227,019 (converted from €200,000). At the time of publishing, the project is currently sitting at $1,855,847 with 12,842 backers and 18 days to go. Almost all of the stretch goals have been met, with only one left at the current time. There are many aspects of the board game that fans of Deep Rock Galactic will likely appreciate; for example, one of the Kickstarter exclusives available is a beer mug event marker much like the mugs players can get from the Abyss Bar. Other stretch goals that have been unlocked include miniature figures of Molly and Bosco, two of the main helpers in Deep Rock Galactic‘s solo mining expeditions.
Mood Publishing is the developer of the Deep Rock Galactic board game. The company is based in Denmark and has 5 other games under its belt, but this will be the company’s first time creating a board game based on a video game. The key movement element of the Deep Rock Galactic board game includes tile-laying, where players will flip tiles to see where they are going and what they have to face. Some of these tiles will include enemies to face, minerals to collect, or stalagmites they will have to drill through. Each of the dwarves will have classic skills available to use, such as platform building, grappling hooks, Sentry Guns, and drills. Players will have to fight their way through all of the different glyphids and the size scale between the dwarf minifig and the Oppressor minifig is an impressive difference.
Kickstarter seems to be the ideal way for video games to see their board game adaptations come to life. The Resident Evil board game, like Deep Rock Galactic, was fully funded shortly after its launch, and it’s just one example from a long list of board games funded through the platform. Board games are an exciting new way for players to enjoy their favorite titles without having to log in to a computer or video game console. Now, with the board game version, fans can share their love of Rock and Stone with those who might not be interested in video games. Deep Rock Galactic – The Board Game is currently scheduled to ship in December 2022.
